Even though the VT 70 was not the first diesel loco operating in Austria it was the first to give fully satisfactory service, thanks to its robust design. In 1933, Grazer Waggonfabrik and Wiener Lokomotivfabrik delivered 10 such locos for service on branch lines, which included hauling passenger trains of up to 200 tons. The last locos were running in the area of Villach and on branch lines around St. Pölten and Wels. Under the BBÖ regime, the locos were named VT 70; during the DR epoch Pwitvt 823-832; and ÖBB took 7 of them over as 5070 series.
